Hours after winning the Miss Turkey 2017 and getting the right to represent Turkey at Miss World 2017 to be held in China in November, Itir Esen, the winner of Miss Turkey 2017 has been dethroned on Sept. 22 after a tweet she posted about the July 15, 2016 coup attempt came to light.
“We regret to inform that such a tweet has been posted by Itır Esen. It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organization to promote such a post, when it aims to introduce Turkey to the world and contribute to its image,” the statement said.
Following the decrowning, Aslı Sümen, who was the runner-up of this year’s Miss Turkey pageant, automatically gained the right to participate in the Miss World pageant, which will be held in China this year.
According to Sozcu newspaper and other media the tweet, which has since been erased, said: “I got my period on the morning of the July 15 martyrs’ day. I’m marking the day by bleeding as a representation of the martyrs’ blood.”
Esen reportedly denied the account was hers. But the organization said the tweet came to their attention after the competition and that it took them “hours” to determine that was Esen’s.
“We are sad to announce that we have reached the conclusion that the tweet was posted by Itir Esen,” the organization quoted Sandikcioglu as saying. “It is not possible for the Miss Turkey Organization, whose aim is to promote Turkey worldwide and to contribute to its image, to accept such a posting.”
Runner-up Asli Sumen who was originally crowned Miss Universe Turkey 2017will now represent Turkey at Miss World 2017 but it is not confirmed who will represent Turkey at Miss Universe 2017.
