An African-American nuclear chemist from Washington, DC, won the 2017 edition of Miss USA held on 14 May 2017. Kara’s win is a back to back victory for District of Columbia as last year winner Deshauna Barber also represented D.C.
Miss District of Columbia, Kára McCullough, bested 50 other contestants including first runner-up Miss New Jersey, Chhavi Verg, and second runner-up Miss Minnesota , Meridith Gould. Kara will now represent the U.S. at the Miss Universe contest.
25-year-old Kara was born in Italy and raised in Virginia Beach. She studied nuclear chemistry at South Carolina. She works as a nuclear chemist for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
