While the question and answer round test the intelligence of beauty queens, it is not a guarantee that the one who answers the best will win the crown. But this is the round that shows how a beauty queen can handle pressure and can be a spokesperson for the cause beauty pageants believed in. Like every year, we have seen and heard them speaking. So who is the best in my opinion? For me, the best in question and answer round comes from Miss Universe France 2015. She was asked a question which was a global problem that world leaders have been trying to tackle since ages. Flora was asked about terrorism and the attack which had happened recently in her home country. The exact question was “Having experienced terrorism first hand yourself what is the best way for the government to combat this rising threat?” She said,”In my opinion, to fight terrorism, first we have to know where the problems are coming from, we have to listen to these people who are committing these attacks so we have to find the problem at its heart and for us French, we have to learn to be happy, to live and to be among ourselves”
She spoke the truth which people often failed to understand or deliberately ignored so not as to get caught up in the blame game and “who is responsible?” If the judges at the Miss Universe had given this answer a closer look, Flora would have been on top. She was first in the interview round in Miss World contest. So it’s hard to believe she was left out in the top 3.
The problem of terrorism is a global phenomenon and a complex one. The rise of terrorism or the ever increasing network of ISIS can be attributed to the failure of countries invading other countries without properly rehabilitating the victim countries after the attack and improper development of nation building aftermath of the attack. The native often caught in their own distress harbored hatred and prejudice against others outside their culture. People from the radicalism group see opportunity in this and takes advantage of this situation. People who are faced with poverty, discrimination or extremes conditions becomes another victim of terrorism. These are some of the root causes and the problem at its heart which Miss France was referring to. Miss Coquerel spoke so many words and give out a message in just a few lines.
Last year, UN Ambassador for Human Rights, Angelena Jolie who addressed the UN special envoy had said, “We cannot look at Syria, and the evil that has arisen from the ashes of indecision, and think this is not the lowest point in the world’s inability to protect and defend the innocent,’ Jolie said. ‘We are standing by in Syria,’ she said, adding that the council’s powers lie unused because its members cannot agree on how to address the conflict”
This is the same truth highlighted by Miss France Flora Coquerel. Though, beauty pageants might not be considered as a platform for such issues, Flora highlited what the world doesn’t want to listen. Nor people want to know why is it happening. She might not have been taken seriously when she said that by the judges or the people watching it but she herself had experienced first-hand the November terror attacks on Paris carried out by IS jihadis, so its high time people start listening.
