I once posted my blog in one of the popular forum and the comments were great but there was one comment which got me to write this one and leave the other blog I was writing already which I was halfway through. On seeing my profile one person had asked me about my nationality and I didn’t look Indian enough and whether people with my types of looks are appreciated. I did explain India was a diverse country with people from different race live together in harmony. So I thought this was a perfect way to write about North – East people from India who have done well in the fashion industry and beauty pageants in India. There are many of them like Sonam Pachey, Esther Jamir, Dipanita Sharma, Jantee Hazarika, Siddhart Gogoi etc. Here are some of them:
Ketholeno Kense became a household name when she went on to win the ‘Hunt for the Kingfisher Supermodels’ whose format is similar to Next top Model, and featured in the Kingfisher Calendar. “She will become a top model one day,” predicted one of the top fashion photographers Atul Kasbekar when he shot Ketholena for Kingfisher Calendar, 2014 edition. She has walked the ramp for some of the country’s leading designers at Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week, The Tarun Tahiliani show and has landed a couple of fashion magazine editorial.
Akuonuo Khezhie’s first major break came when she was selected as one of the finalists in the Miss India 2007 contest where she won the Sony Miss India and Pantaloons Face of the Year. She moved to New York and signed a contract with Star Models for 6 months and then signed up with Ikon Model Management. She has walked the prestigious New York Fashion Week 2010 and the Couture Fashion Week 2011. The same year, she started the biggest performing arts institute in northeast India, ‘Northeast India Academy of Performing Arts’ in Dimapur, Nagaland.
Kethose Nagi, another girl from Nagaland and a former flight attendant based in Bangalore, not only won accolades in the northeast or in the country but even abroad. She was a contestant in Kingfisher Calendar Hunt in 2011. She studied Master’s in Fashion management and Entrepreneurship at Northumbria University UK, went on to become Miss Newcastle British Empire 2014 recently. Her first international photo shoot was for PUMP magazine UK. She is now a professional model based in the North East of UK.
Carol Humtsoe was signed by the renowned Modelling Agency – Elite Model Management which has produced super models like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Ujjwala Raut, Gisele Bunchen. In a short span of time she has established herself as a model and has worked for world’s best known brands such as Benetton, Gucci and has also done few shows for NDTV Good Times. Currently, she is walking the ramp for the prestigious Lakme Fashion week. Her first movie was a cameo under the famed Balaji Telefilms, Kya Superkool Hai Hum.
The Assamese beauty is a not fresher to success. She has established herself as a successful model in the west and is often referred to as “the exotic Indian’ She has graced the covers of top magazines like Elle and Vogue. In 2001, Monikangana won the Metropolitan Top Model Contest France for which eyes of International fashion designers like Christian Dior, Vivienne Westwood and Leonard. Monikongana has modelled for Mac Cosmetics. She also appeared in editorials for Vogue, Elle, Tank magazine to name a few. In 2008, Monikangana has won the Cosmopolitan Fun, Fearless Female Awards under the category of Female Model.
Dipannita Sharma’s first fame came when she was chosen in the final five contestants of Miss India 1998 contest and won Miss Photogenic. The Assamese beauty has walked the ramps for all major designers in the country and a few in abroad. She has also worked with international design houses such as valentine and Fendi. The beautiful and talented Dipannita is an also an actress whose first film was the much appreciated film ‘16 December’ in 2002 and later starred in other films such as ‘Dil Vil Pyar Vyar’, ‘My Brother Nikhil’, ‘Ladies vs Ricky Behl’ etc. She was also the face of Breguet watches and jewellry.
Before competing in Kingfisher Calendar Hunt 2013, she was seen in the blockbuster movie, ‘Om Shanti Om’. She was a national archer. At the Kingfisher Calendar Hunt contest she came third. Modelling happened by chanced for her while studying in Mumbai. L’Oreal approached her for a photo shoot during a college festival. Her photo was published in a magazine. Soon she got a call from Elite Modelling Agency, an international renowned modelling agency and was signed by them. After that she took part in various shows like Wills Fashion Week, shows of many renowned designers and other advertisements. He has worked with the top names in the glamour world including top designers like Tarun Tehiliani, Shantanu Goenka,
Rohit Bal to name a few. Later, Lin visited New York. When she was in New York, she did a photo shoot for a diamond jewellery company called ‘Ozuro’ and she continued modelling in New York.
She might not have won the Miss India crown but she wins hearts of the masses. She was declared a Reliance Digital Multimedia winner which helped her to get into the top 10 of Femina Miss India 2015. She also won WeChat Miss Popular. The very beautiful girl next door, Rewati, has been busy attending fashion events or promotions or cutting ribbons. For her journey to stardom and life in general has just started.
Another Naga girl who is currently in the first ever India’s next top model. Her origin however is quite interesting as her mother is from Nagaland and her father from Kerala. Gloria is proud of her mixed heritage. The fashionista and confident girl never had any experience of fashion world before but looking at her stint in the reality contest it never looked like she is a first timer. It’s her positive attitude that helps her. She is the possible top 3 among fans and the one to likely walk away with the title India’s next top model. She has already impressed the judges which include model turned actor Lisa Haydon, ace photographer Dabboo Ratnani, popular VJ Anusha Dandekar and grooming expert Neeraj Gaba. Gaba even went on to call her the one with the most potential.
Aryan Baruah is into theater and arts. His first limelight came when he won the Oriental Model Contest in the men’s category at Shanghai. He was 1st runner up in Gladrag Manhunt contest and went on to compete in Manhunt International where he was among the top 15 and he came third in the sub contest, Mr Personality. A successful model, he has walked for leading Indian designer such as Tarun Tahiliani, Rajesh Pratap Singh, Wendell Rodricks, Raghavendrea Rathore.
The Manipuri model has walked for various well known designers in India. He was a 2nd Runner up in Mr Pune contest and was among the pre finalist for Gladrag Manhunt Contest. Few of his TV commercial includes Nokia which was screened in 2003-04 and other international TV commercial for Close-Up. He has done shows for Nike, Jack & Jones, Lycra, and Chennai International Fashion Weekend 2013. He is now all set to represent India at Mister International,2015 in Philippines after being selected among 20 models.
