Aishwarya Rai Bachan – Wit and Wisdom of the impeccable queen.

Often hailed as the most beautiful women in the world, Aishwarya Rai Bachan is someone I admire for her beauty, intelligence, personality and the list goes on. My fascination for Miss World started with her winning the Miss World title in Sun City, South Africa. She is the epitome of beauty. The way she conducts herself in front of the public is so admirable. I love her not just for her beauty and intelligence but also her articulation – the way she talks and the way she silenced her critics. Every word has been used to describe her personality but I don’t think adjectives are enough for her. Watching and reading her interview is such a delight. What amazes me is the way she gaurds her personal life and how she is able to protect her dear ones despite being a public figure. She is a star yet so modest and humble. I live by and follow what she has to say in her interviews. Here are some of the quotes I find worth reading and following:

1. Her motive for entering Miss India Contest and participating in Miss World contest

‘’At that time, it (beauty pageants) was not a stepping stone to make inroads into the film industry. I was declining movie offers. Instead, I took the opportunity to represent India’’

‘’For me, it went beyond being a beauty queen. For me, it was about being the 20-year-old girl from India on international platform and a lot of people actually would assume that I wasn’t even educated in India because of the way I’d speak. And they’d be like, ‘Have you studied in India? Do you actually speak English out there?’ and, I was like, ‘This is so interesting that so many people know so little about my country.’ and this is exactly what I wanted to do when I set out on this little mission in my head.’’

2. Beauty with a Purpose and Mission

‘’God has given me plenty of reasons to smile and I feel it’s time to spread it around. There are a lot of children out there who so desperately need help, but can’t receive timely care because their families cannot afford this surgery or are ill-educated about this condition.’’

‘’People know me more because of my eyes. So, I decided to donate my eyes. But before that, I acquired all the information about the campaign. Within what time after death one has to donate eyes, and all other information. Only then I decided to donate my eyes. It’s not that just for doing something, I donated my eyes. I found that useful so I did it. I like to do social service from my heart. Whatever is possible I do, but I don’t speak of that. But I would like to give more time to it in the near future.’’

3. Upon hearing that Julia Roberts had said that Aishwarya was the most beautiful woman she had ever seen

’That was embarrassing; at first I didn’t believe she said that. I thought it was a rumor started by a journalist. But it’s sweet. She’s an incredible actor and she seems like a wonderful person, so all you can do is say, Thank you.’’

4. On her choice of films

‘’I have never deliberately driven attention to the fact that I am working in Hollywood films. I have categorically stated that I am working in different kinds of films, be it British, Hindi, Tamil or Bengali. It’s all about doing films, which are my passion.’’

5. Message to the youth

“My biggest concern is always the students who are working toward a certain career – when they limit themselves to just that one option. They need to know that the world is huge – it’s an ocean, and there are so many options. It’s not the end of the world if they don’t get to pursue an apparent childhood dream. That’s really important, because you find a lot of kids who believe that they want to become a doctor or an aeronautical engineer or something, and if they don’t manage to make their degree, that’s the end. They feel so defeated, which is very disheartening. It’s sad to know that people let themselves be limited by these aspirations.” (Forbes Magazine, August 25th 2005)

6. On Romours, gossips and false news

“Normally I don’t pay any heed to the stuff churned out by rumour mills. Who has the time and energy to spend on mindless gossip? But if somebody crosses the limit and turns malicious, I go all out to have the offenders brought to book. I won’t allow anyone to sully my name for their personal benefit, like boosting the sales of a magazine at my expense.”

7. The Price of being a superstar and how she handles herself from media scrutiny

“Yes, you’re right. The more you achieve in life, the more susceptible you are to the vagaries of life. But the challenge lies in not letting it all affect you. If you allow the pressures to pull you down, you won’t be able to forge ahead in life. When you’re in the public eye, you must learn to accept the bouquets as well as the brickbats. In a profession like this, you can’t afford to be high strung. You’ve got to take the highs and lows in your stride. Anyway, from the look of it, I don’t see any reason to complain about. I have the plum offers with the best of directors coming my way. And I’m determined to work my way up on the dint of my diligence and do hope to live up to people’s expectations.”

8. The best wife

“Even if I end up being a housewife, I’ll give it my 100 per cent. I’ll be the best housewife in the aishwarya-79whole wide world. That I promise.”

9. Why you should stop pleasing others

“Of the 100 people, you meet every day, at least ten are bound to dislike you. You live and learn, you can’t please everyone.”

10. Why a hit or failed movie won’t affect her?

“I don’t believe in numbers. In fact, I am here only to be called a good actress. Moreover, labels are not new to me. I was tagged a lot of things. Since I never considered any of them seriously, I don’t think I will take this one seriously. It is part of the game.”

11. This is called believing in yourself and being professional

‘’I know for a fact that if there’s a role which I am suited for, I’ll be signed on. I’ll never go begging.’’

12. Be what you are

‘’You give to the world your greatest gift when you’re being yourself.’

13. The reality of life and accepting life the way it is.

‘’Life will take its toll on all of us. We get injured, we get old. It’s really sad to try to run away from these harsh realities of life. Looks are not everything. I am not going to look beautiful all the time.”

14. Why she will never snub anyone and her way of silencing her detractors perfectly.

‘’I am an emotional person off-screen and would hate to hurt or snub someone.’’

‘’Someone asked me why I’m politically correct, even when people hit out so openly at me. But the truth is, I’ve never been brought up to behave any other way. I can’t say anything hurtful about anyone. I just don’t believe in saying mean things. I won’t feel good doing that. It’s strange why being well behaved is perceived as being too ‘propah’ and staid. This is the way I am. I’m amazed how many people feel good hitting out at me. They’re welcome to do it. Earlier, they had more leeway to deny their indiscretions in print. But now on television they look pretty ridiculous denying what they say.”

15. About being on the Oprah show and the Sari.

“Yes, I was extremely happy to be on her show. I absolutely admire her. I never thought I’d actually be meeting her — and that too, on her show! It’s so strange. But prior to our meeting, during my visit to the US for the premiere of Bride & Prejudice, I had some afternoons off and I watched Oprah. I thought how wonderful it would be to be on her show. And within a month, I was! : “I thought I’d wear one on the show, and packed two of them, in case Oprah wanted to wear one too. As luck would have it, my flight was delayed and I reached minutes before the show went on air! So I had no time to change, which is a pity. Americans love the garment but have no clue how it’s tied. Oprah is very respectful and appreciative of all cultures. She was very curious about the sari and I helped her put it on, on air! She has sent me an autographed picture saying, ‘Next time we change the blouse.’ She was very sweet.” (Rediff, May 18, 2005)

16. Silence is the key

‘’I always believed that my silence on several topics will be an advantage in the long run.”

17. About turning down the role opposite Jackie Chan in the movie Time Breaker (2004). Love her positive attitude

“I did not have the required dates as I was busy with the shows abroad. I had to turn down the film. I have no regrets because there is always a next time.”

18. On asked: Do you agree that you’re not very publicly demonstrative when it comes to your relationship? From Stardust: December 2004 Issue

“You’re not asking about my family, you’re talking about my personal life, about a relationship with a man in one’s life. Do I need to be demonstrative? I am very protective in any relationship. Be it my family, or the man in my life, or my closest friend. All these relationships are very precious to me. The reason why I don’t bring them into my interviews has a simple logic, I don’t know whether you all will understand or not, but I’ll explain. I am not demonstrative because, with due respect to you and the media, the way I speak and the way it’s translated in the written form, doesn’t sound the same all the time. And the relationships are too precious to me. I can’t let them be in any way subjected to Chinese whisper syndromes or any kind of misrepresentation at any point in time, at any phase of a relationship. These are different emotional bonds, I don’t want it to be colored in any written words. Out of pure defense and protective nature of my various relationships, I am not demonstrative. I’m not into name-dropping. I would never put them on the dock just to make an interesting interview.”

19. True to the core and earn your respect by your hard work even if it means climbing a mountain

“Women in the industry have been exploited very often, but there are some actors who believe that the short cut to stardom is through nudity or exposure. Such success is, in fact, very short-lived.”

20. The Press and her relationship and The Real she

“I don’t want to win any brownie points for giving good copy to the press. I’ve been extremely dignified and well-behaved while dealing with journalists. So many journalists who have interacted with me have come away pleasantly surprised

“Well, when people call me real. I love it. And it has a lot of meaning, It means a lot to me and it’s touching. People would see that and acknowledge it.”

“The person you are talking to … this is who I am, I travel light. There is no baggage of pretension and that is why I am able to be so comfortable whether at home with my family, at an event, shooting a movie or doing an interview,”

21. The well grounded woman

“I am not in the business of creating this picture-perfect image. I believe in living my life with a certain degree of clarity. It’s not an image-building exercise and if I wanted publicity I would have graced the cover of every magazine. But I believe in treading the middle path.”

“I walk the middle path. There is family and there are friends, but my connection is most with God. I thank Him that He has helped me remain connected with myself.”

22. The price of being a celebrity mother and her weight gain issues. This one is one of my fav. quotes of her.

“The haters are just a drop in the ocean. There is that much more love. Any kind of negativity in any case just drops off. it doesn’t matter at all. People see the real picture. They have given me so much love throughout my career … that’s the real thing.  This is reality. This is who I am. I am a mother and this can happen and it happened with me and it’s fine. That’s life. I’ve never been the one who endorse size-zero anyways. You guys speculated i was pregnant before i was so many times. I’ve lived the real life in the public eye and that continues.”

“I am not complaining, this has been the way of life for so long now. From your adult life, from the time you have stepped out and get working, multi-tasking, working round the clock. People talk about sleepless nights but that’s the way of life for us anyway. Can’t be complaining when it comes to your baby. No way, no way.”

“I have always enjoyed my food and I have never been one for strict diets and I’m not taking any recommendations now either!”

“I’ve always been a person who’s been extremely comfortable in my own skin. If I wanted to get in super sexy, slim or whatever the adages are, it is so easy today! You can get that done instantly and please, we are from showbiz… we know everyone in the business! Weight gain, especially post pregnancy, is a natural process depending on metabolism and if it does happen, IT’S FINE! It’s not who you are on the outside that matters.”

24. On being appointed UNAIDS International Goodwill Ambassador.

“I am honoured to accept this appointment. Spreading awareness on health issues, especially related to women and children, has always been a priority for me. And now, as a new mother, I can personally relate to this––the joys and concerns of every mother and the hopes that we have for our children.”

“I strongly believe that every baby should be born free from HIV. And I wish that every woman living with HIV stays healthy and has access to treatment. I promise that with UNAIDS, I will do my utmost to make this happen.”

“I will initially be like a student, holding the hand of the organization which will lead me to the real picture on the ground,”

“I don’t want to be just a poster girl, don’t want to be just part of a platform that will have my face and quotes and voice,” “This is a turning point in my life. I wanted to be associated with the UN at a time when I could actually contribute to the work and the causes,” “By coming on board, I hope to give further impetus to the work that UNAIDS has done and further contribute to the help spread the message,”

“UNAIDS’ passion is infectious and I would like to contribute to it. This is shared responsibility and we can achieve it and make it possible,”

24. The good daughter who wants to be a good mother for her daughter

“I have such clarity about who I am and my approach to life which I have my parents to thank for. I don’t know exactly what they did … what secret inculcation I had but I am focused on my own reality and that is what I hope to give my children too. I knew right from the beginning how important it is not to take either the compliments or the criticism seriously. Once you know who you are, you don’t let anyone’s opinion define you. Otherwise, you will just disintegrate with the negativity.”

25. Being graceful and thankful

“Right from the beginning, the volume (of attention) I have received has been huge and for that, I thank the media and all my fans and well-wishers. I have always accepted all the compliments with grace … it’s not easy for me to gush, but I keep saying thank you in all humility. The praise, the compliments, the scrutiny and judgment has been consistent and continues till today and it has become just a way of life for me. But it isn’t my fulcrum.”

26. Last But not the least some more sayings of the Goddess of beauty

“I always say walking the red carpet is your opportunity to have fun with fashion. I don’t think you have to take it too seriously. But at the same time, you’re in the world of seduction, of fashion. But I believe being confident and dressing in something that truly shows who you are, is my little secret.”

‘’I’m not the type who’ll yell about my achievements from the rooftops.’’

“Awards and titles are not new to me. I have seen it all during the Miss India and Miss World. My biggest award is when people stand up and appreciate me.”

“Cinema is an ocean. You can never swim the entire length and breadth of it. As long as the plunge is sincere, you stay afloat and get to your destination.”

‘’It’s nice to be important, but it’s more important to be nice.’’

‘’Life is a stage, and we are all characters. So play your part and play it well!’’

This is why she is respected a lot and aptly called the goddess. She exudes charm, grace and charisma whether you see her in magazines, TV, Red Carpets or you’re just thinking of her. Having already conquered our hearts and minds she will continue to conquer the next generations to come. She is Aishwarya Rai Bachan.
